When Robert Collins first arrived in London, Ontario, from England, little did he know that his unique perspective would become a transformative force in shaping the experiences of countless other newcomers. As the London & Middlesex Local Immigration Partnership marks its 15th anniversary, Collins stands as a beacon of inspiration, demonstrating the profound impact of perspective, perseverance, and community engagement.

"My involvement is informed by where I work, my own experience as a newcomer, and the contributions that newcomers make to the vibrancy of the community," Collins explains, encapsulating the unique lens through which he views his work.

As a Senior Advisor for Workforce Initiatives at the London Economic Development Corporation (LEDC), Collins has been bridging the gap between newcomer talent and local workforce needs since LMLIP's inception. His efforts have been instrumental in creating forums where the needs of both newcomers and host communities can be understood and addressed.

"LMLIP has provided a forum to better understand what is and is not working for both newcomers and the host communities... that has then led to change," Collins reflects.

Collins has taken pride in the LMLIP's awareness campaigns throughout his tenure. "'I am London,' showcasing newcomer talent, and 'All are Welcome Here' are signature achievements," he notes, "and they derive from the continuous engagement and perseverance of those involved."

These initiatives have played a crucial role in shifting perceptions and opening doors for newcomers in London and Middlesex, fostering a more inclusive and dynamic community.

Looking ahead, Collins envisions an even more influential role for LMLIP. "LMLIP develops an increased presence and ability to inform and guide policies and programs that contribute to the success of newcomers and their communities. Its perspective is sought out and used," he says, outlining his hopes for the next five years.

For Collins, the real magic of LMLIP happens in the small moments of connection and understanding. He cherishes times "when in a meeting or conversation, a new and refreshing insight or perspective is shared and valued."

Ultimately, Collins sees LMLIP as "a forum to shape and guide an increasingly diverse and vibrant locale." This simple statement encapsulates years of dedicated work, countless connections made, and a community forever changed for the better.

As London continues to grow and evolve, Robert Collins values the critical role that LMLIP plays to ensure that every newcomer has the opportunity to contribute their unique talents to our vibrant community, reinforcing the city's reputation as a welcoming home for immigrants from around the world.
