How One Volunteer's Journey Transformed Newcomer Support in London
From Volunteer to Leader: Amani Radhaa's 15-Year Journey with LMLIP
Fifteen years ago, Amani Radhaa joined the London & Middlesex Local Immigration Partnership (LMLIP) as a volunteer. Little did she know how much it would change the lives of many newcomers to London.
"LMLIP provided the perfect platform for collaboration, enabling me to contribute meaningfully to this cause," says Radhaa. Her path from eager volunteer to community leader reflects LMLIP's evolution over the past decade and a half.
Ask Radhaa about her standout moment, and she'll tell you about the 2015 Housing Forum. "We brought the urgent housing needs of immigrants to the forefront of public discussion," she remembers. "This event truly showcased the importance of raising awareness about the unique challenges newcomers face."
Today, Radhaa serves as the Associate Director at Northwest London Resource Centre. She's been a critical player in LMLIP since its early days, her leadership and passion for helping newcomers integrate through community teamwork shaping the organisation’s direction.
What does Radhaa see as LMLIP's biggest win? "One of the most significant achievements has been LMLIP's ability to unite diverse community partners to address emerging needs faced by newcomers."
Why does this matter? Radhaa puts it: "LMLIP has had a profound impact on London and Middlesex by facilitating collaboration among agencies and ensuring that the needs and voices of newcomers are heard."
Looking ahead, Radhaa has big dreams for LMLIP. "I envision LMLIP expanding its partnerships and continuing to lead efforts that shape policy and services that support the diverse needs of the growing newcomer population," she says, her words full of hope and determination.
Her time with LMLIP, especially as Chair of the Settlement Sub-Council, has only strengthened her beliefs. "It has reinforced my belief in the power of community partnerships in creating lasting change for newcomers," Radhaa confirms.
As LMLIP turns 15, Radhaa's story shows just how much it's done. In her own words: "LMLIP is an amazing network that amplifies the voices of newcomers and drives meaningful change through collaboration." It's clear that LMLIP will keep making London a better home for everyone.
